The Lakes

Lacar

Lacar Lake

It is one of the famous “7 lakes” and it ends in the Pacific Ocean. It has numerous beaches, one in San Martin de los Andes, another in Villa Quila Quina and the last one is in Hua Hum. This lake presents a very good variety and size of trouts. Great fishes have been captured in this lake.

I´ve had been fishing here since I was very young, like much people of the city of San Martín de los Andes. I´ve crossed every shore and visited every bay. The fishing is very good, mainly in the beginning of the season.

Lolog

Lolog Lake

The Lolog lake is known by its browns. It is one of the lakes that really taught me how to fish and wading Whenever I go it soaks me with new experiences and helps me revive many good memories. It is definitely a special lake in my life. It is one of the lakes I like the most. I recommend wading. This lake also has a very good variety of trouts.

Huechulafquen

Huechulafquen Lake

Huechulafquen is one of the biggest lakes in the region and it is situated next to the city of Junín de los Andes, the capital of the trouts. It is quite paradisiacal because of its long beaches. This lake has a very good variety of trouts and its bays are really special. I don´t fish in this lake that much, but I must say its trouts are fat and the fishing is incredible.

Nahuel Huapi

Nahuel Huapi Lake

It is one of the most imposing lakes in Patagonia. The places that I enjoy to fish are the last “arms” of the lake, near the city of Villa La Angostura. I recommend to camp at least two nights near this lake.

Very great and wild pieces had been captured here. Two of the biggest trouts in the world were captured here: a brown trout in December 1952, with 16 Kilos and 99 centimeters, and an enormous rainbow trout of 11 kilos fished with the modality of “Trolling”. Both fishes are exhibited in the Asosiación de Pesca and Caza Nahuel Huapi, in the city of San Carlos de Bariloche, (Province of Río Negro, Argentina).

Curruhué Grande

Curruhué Grande Lake

This lake always offers me great experiences. It has a very good variety of trouts. Motor navigation is not aloud and the fishing weight is quite light. This lake has lots of visitors thanks to its incredible surroundings, but it you can´t find a lot of fishermen or women there. It is one hour away by car from San Martin de los Andes and Junin de los Andes. The wading of the lake is relatively easy and the brown trouts and fontinalis are famous there. It is one of the places I like the most and I always go there with other fishing guides and friends at least once a year

Meliquina

Meliquina Lake

This lake does not really motivate me to go fishing. It offers other activities instead. Villa Meliquina is a small group of wooden houses and a few small restaurants and cafes ideal to relax and breathe fresh air. I recommend having peaceful walks near the Meliquina River. It has great attractiveness and the views are incredible.

Hermoso

Hermoso Lake

Its name emphasizes its beauty. I specially recommend camping in this lake. One of the lake extremes is baptized by a beautiful river that offers the perfect silence to connect with incredible fishing. It has very good rainbow and fontinalis trouts. It is known by the fanatics of the dry fishing, by its great amount of rushes.

Villarino

Villarino Lake

Neighbor of the Falkner Lake, the Villarino is a small lake where the fishing is very attractive. Much people cross all the country to arrive and fish in the river that runs from the Villarino to the Falkner. It is famous because of its great brown trouts.

Falkner

Falkner Lake

Its brown trouts are for history. In my particular history, I have several photos and a lot of memories in this lake. Many of the local fishermen and women choose this lake among others. It is possible to fish from the boat and wading. Also known by its bay full of rushes and the river that connects this lake with Lago Nuevo.

Escondido

Escondido Lake

“Escondido” means hidden and its waters are really hard to find. Everytime I visit it I remember my godfather “Victor”, who once told me the secret of the wild berries that grow there. The fishing is very good during all season. Only a few adventurers visit it and cross it bay to bay. It is possible to use a boat or canoe for fishing.

Filo Hua Hum

Filo Hua Hum Lake

This lake is small, but imposing. Also known by its brown trouts and its incredible bays. A lot of people that visit it return every year. It is easy to wading and it has very good brown and rainbow trouts. It is one of the lakes I enjoy fishing the most.

Traful

Traful Lake

Queñi

Queñi Lake

It is an incredible place. Known by its rainbow trouts, this lake must be also in the “top ten” more visited lakes of the region. It is really close to Chile and it has enchanted bays. It has stone walls that does not allowed you to wading and a lot of local fishermen and women appreciate its rushes because of their amazing beauty.

I recommend fishing from the boat or canoe. Motor navigation is prohibited and that is positive, due to the light weight of fishing during the season. I have many good childhood memories in this lake, and whenever I fish there, it offers me an unforgettable experience.

Catch and Release

This has become a very popular activity for the past few years in order to minimize the loss of organisms, which has turned into a serious problem in some places, not only due to anglers but also as a result of pollution, deforestation and other disorders produced by our civilization.

That is why it is important to do it in the right way, since the survival of the animal once returned to the water depends on the injuries it suffers when caught.

Although some people say that fish do not feel any pain, it causes a trauma and a high level of stress. The seriousness of the injury or injuries suffered by a fish will depend on several factors:

  1. The depth where the bait gets hooked in the digestive tract, and if the animal has been robbed, the part of its body where it has been wounded and the depth of the wound.
  2. The size, shape and type of hook.
  3. The time spent "playing" with the trout.
  4. The way in which it is taken and kept out of the water.
  5. The time it is kept out of the water.
  6. The way of extracting the bait.
  7. The way of returning it into the water.
